French authorities to begin intercepting small boats in English Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the Channel, after months of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader sent a letter to the President asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is essential that we implement these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a possible technique to disable the propellers of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a brief shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous Interior Minister left government.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be seeking methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
