British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.
"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
