Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
